Finish about four weeks out and keep the final week clear, since sensitivity needs about a week to fade and color can keep shifting after that. Is two or three weeks before the wedding too late?
No. Two or three weeks out still clears the first week after a session, which is when sensitivity rises and fades, and a month out simply gives the color longer to settle. It’s also what two dentists in the American Dental Association’s MouthHealthy wedding feature chose for their own wedding. As one of them put it, that way “by your actual wedding day, your teeth aren’t too sensitive.”
Sensitivity is the quick part, all but gone by day seven for the 120 people in one trial. Color takes its time, and across eight in-office systems, some of the change faded between week one and week six.
So the earlier you finish, the more of that drift is behind you when the photographer arrives. How long color keeps moving is still an open question, and every one of these studies was done in a dental office; none looked at a studio session.
Can you whiten your teeth the day before your wedding?
You can, but it’s the one wedding-week appointment that doesn’t belong next to hair and makeup. Book it for the day before or the wedding morning and you’ll say your vows inside the first 48 hours, when sensitivity peaked after in-office whitening. Up to two-thirds of people can feel mild to moderate, temporary sensitivity early in whitening, according to the ADA. Your color can slip in that first week too. After light-enhanced in-office whitening, some of the change had already faded within a week.
Whiten the day before and there’s no time to see where your color lands before the photos, and dry teeth can fool you in the meantime. Front teeth that were simply dried for 30 minutes, with no whitening at all, were nearly all back within range of their original color a day later, and the researchers advise judging color after whitening once teeth have rehydrated.
Keep the day before for the rehearsal dinner and a good night’s sleep. If you’re already inside the final week, skip whitening this time, enjoy the day, and book the chair for after the honeymoon.
How far ahead should you plan each step?
Count back from the wedding date, or from an engagement shoot if there’s one on the calendar, and book your session the way you’d book a fitting, early and on a quiet afternoon.

If you’re using strips or trays, you’re on a longer clock. Two of Crest’s strip kits run 10 days and 20 days by their own directions, and dentist-made take-home trays run 6 to 28 days, according to a review the ADA cites, so start early enough to finish about a month out.

Wedding dates move, and if yours does, your deposit moves with it. Deposits aren’t refundable, but they carry over when you reschedule, with no penalty for simply needing a different day. The balance is charged one week before your booking.
What does a whitening session feel like?
Calm, mostly. The weeks before a wedding run on seating charts and other people’s questions, and in the chair, none of them can reach you.
“The lights dim. The arctic blue rises.” That’s how Danyale sets the scene on the studio’s site. You sink into a zero-gravity massage chair and wear an LED light mask while you wait. Aftercare comes with the visit, and the selfie station is there for the picture you’ll want before the photographer’s.
You stay in charge the whole time. A trained whitening technician sets up your station, walks you through each step, and stays with you — you handle everything that goes in your mouth.
Picture the wedding morning. You’re getting ready in Over-the-Rhine with the photographer on the way. Your session is weeks behind you, a quiet half hour in a blue-lit room, and your smile has had all that time to settle.
When should the wedding party schedule whitening?
On the same calendar as yours, about a month out and never the night before. If the shower or bachelorette weekend lands around then, make it part of the plan. How you book depends on the size of your crew.

- Nine to twelve, at the studio. Bring the shower here, with the room gone blue, someone stretched out in the massage chair and everyone else at the grazing station. Do you have to give up coffee and wine after whitening?
No, not the way you’ve probably heard, and that’s good news for the toast. Coffee, black tea, grape juice, red wine and cola made no significant difference to whitening compared with a strict “white diet” in one systematic review, and a second review of five trials came to the same place.
If coffee is your daily ritual, follow the aftercare that comes with your session, then ease off a little. People who rinsed with coffee around in-office whitening came out just as white as those rinsing with tea or water, but three weeks on they measured less bright on one scale, and the researchers suggest holding back on coffee “at least to some extent.”
Will the studio come to you?
Yes. Danyale wanted Cincinnati to have “a self-care experience as elevated as the ones people travel to other cities for, a way to bring the glow directly to them,” and her story on the studio’s site names “their wedding celebrations” among the places it goes. For $175, the 20-minute private session comes to you, and “pre-event glow prep” is right there on its listing. When the booking form asks for your event date, put in the day of the session itself, about four weeks before the wedding. The group package comes to your place too.

Who should talk to a dentist first?
Whitening is cosmetic, so anything that might be a dental problem goes to a dentist first. That means untreated decay, active gum disease, an unexplained single dark tooth, tetracycline banding, or pain that predates any whitening. If you don’t see a dentist regularly, a checkup a few months out can head off problems close to the date, as MouthHealthy’s wedding feature suggests. One dentist quoted there says she’d have a dentist do wedding whitening in an office, so if that’s your preference too, raise it at the checkup.
Crowns, veneers, bonding and composite fillings keep their own color, since only natural teeth can be whitened, according to the ADA. That can leave restored front teeth mismatched against the teeth beside them, so if most of what shows when you smile is dental work, start with the dentist who placed it.
Sessions aren’t offered during pregnancy, as a studio precaution, and anyone under 18, junior bridesmaids included, should confirm with the studio before booking. Danyale is not a dentist, and no one at the studio diagnoses anything.
